The Market of Opportunity

'Stock Market'
-The stock market is the market in which shares of publicly held companies are issued and traded either through exchanges or over-the-counter markets. Also known as the equity market, the stock market is one of the most vital components of a free-market economy, as it provides companies with access to capital in exchange for giving investors a slice of ownership in the company.

Read more: Investopedia http://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/stockmarket.asp#ixzz4YnVmJsHO

The stock market can be looked at as the land of opportunity. Throughout the markets time it has changed the lives of people in drastic ways. It can make average people into millionaires, millionaires into billionaires, and it can also take everything from people. It's just how you the market plays. You are gambling with your assets and the methods you take result in your financial future, anything could happen.

Now even if you have never heard of the stock market but you wanna start making future investments today, let me break it down easily:

  • The stock market lets investors participate in the financial achievements of the companies whose shares they hold. *that is what we call capital gains*
  • When companies are profitable, stock market investors make money through the dividends the companies pay out *that is a direct inflow of cash*
  • It's a direct inflow of cash because it goes into your pocket, not back into the stock.
  • Now say that you bought a share for $4.00 and now it is at $8.00 you can sell it and make a capital gain of $4.00. Money is greatly made when you do this on a large scale of share buying.
  • Now say that you bought a share for $8.00 and now it is at $4.00 and you sell it then you have a capital loss of $4.00 so you'll have to chalk that up as an L and move on.

Example:
January 1, 2017 20 shares @ $4.00 total $80.00
The company releases a new exciting car
January 10, 2017 20 shares now @ $8.00 total $160.00

Now if you are in the United States you are most likely going to trade stock on the New York Stock Exchange; NASDAQ. This was founded in 1971 so you can imagine how much has changed. If you are a individual who is wanting to start trading I say, "better late than never". But really the younger you start the better off you are but you gotta start somewhere, So, you wanna start trading, first you need to start an account for yourself (can use Scottrade.com). Then you want to put money into the holding so when you want to purchase shares you can.

Example of your Account balance and the order form for buying shares.

Now that you have an account set up through an online broker company and you have funds in your account balance you can start the 'fun stuff'.
I won't get much into detail but this is where you study companies and their finical history and you really want to research each company.
Never forget BUY LOW, SELL HIGH. Which basically means you want to buy shares when they are down so you can sell them when they are high for capital gains.

Now I look at buying stock in three standard ways:

  1. You want to make a quick buck so you would buy low and sell high multiple times in a       short period (Day Trading).
  2. You want to buy stock as an investment so you see the long term potential of a stock and hold onto it for the years to come (Capital Gain).
  3. You want to buy stock and get a cash inflow while also making capital gains (making cash from a stock without selling) so you look for the dividend payout from a share when buying stocks.

Apple has a dividend of $2.08 per share.

Once you have acquired shares then you have started your own portfolio. So the longer you are in the market the more diverse your portfolio will most likely come!

This is a great application to follow your stocks (Yahoo Stocks App)

This is the most simple form; The next level is a little different:

When I say the next level I mean by different forms of being in the stock market. You can hire brokers from top firms to trade stocks for you and create a unique portfolio (at a cost, there is always a cost). You can purchase mutual funds which are pre-packaged portfolios of most likely fortune 500 companies. Then there is working for billionaire companies who day trade by the heart beat with supercomputers 24/7. Supercomputer actually make up 70% of all trades but yet again only 48% of American own stock. Then there is getting into selling against (betting against) the market (that is how people made a lot of money during the mortgage/market crash in 2008).

The Six Reasons Why Virgin America Earned It's Wings as The Best Website

"As a Virgin-branded airline and the only U.S. airline headquartered in California, sustainability has been a part of Virgin America’s DNA from its inception. The airline’s sustainability principles, which were established in its first year of operation, are integrated across the Company. Virgin America has undertaken these efforts not only because they are what the airline’s teammates and customers demand, but also because they’re good for the Company’s bottom-line — and, ultimately, for the future of air travel".

                            2015 Nominee

Virgin America-       Website-           Mobile Site & Apps-
Responsive Redesign               Best User Interface                        Best User Interface

Now why is Virgin America the best designed website?

1 Usability) They are revolutionizing the airline industry and they are trying to change the game from a stressful experience to an simple experience. We all know airline websites are overran with major usability issues, not even complementary drinks could compensate. But Virgin America is here to change those issues and they actually have one of the best websites that pushes usability, accessibility, and responsive design forward. How do we know they are creating change and fixing the issues? They have been named as the first truly responsive airline website which will really change the game for a company.

2 Function) Virgin America hired Work & Co to help them revolutionize their business by helping them change the way their website functions. Airline companies have just copied each other for years but Virgin America wanted to create the website designed for Travelers. VirginAmerica.com is the first responsive airline site and it is said to get users booked in half the time (average 2-second load) and the fastest checkout time (8 second checkout). Purchasing a ticket through this website is now just a  step-by-step process which results in a pocket-fold-up boarding pass.

3 Language) Developed a visual language based on illustrations in place of slow-to-load photographs, and we took inspiration from the company's mood-lit planes and cheeky sense of humor to create an experience that felt distinctly Virgin.

4 User Context ) Virgin America shed light on relevant information that can be used to characterize the situation of a user. Now you are able to simply find your seat on the flight or request a seat and then you can also add individuals in your party and make sure everyone sits where you want. Virgin America talked about how the seen elderly women use this tool with ease which really made them happy for the future of this website.

5 Aesthetics ) This website has a lot to offer and many options but it has a great amount of white space which gives it a fresh feeling, something you want when booking a trip. The color pattern is the same throughout which sticks too the Virgins roots. The typography stays clean and it never breaks pattern. The imagery is used to give you a better look of what you will expect if you've never flown with them and they also use new update art imagery for each state you want to fly to which is a nice feature.

6 Responsive ) People are always on the move so the best website needs to be geared towards people on the move. Thats why this website is compatible as a website, mobile site, and app in which they received Best User Interface in all three categories.

Truth Behind The Moment

“When consumers hear about a product today, their first reaction is ‘Let me search online for it.’And so they go on a journey of discovery: about a product, a service, an issue, an opportunity. Today you are not behind your competition. You are not behind the technology. You are behind your consumer.”

— Rishad Tobaccowala Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer VivaKi

1st Moment of Truth:  visit store or visit commerce site; the purchase decision

2nd Moment of Truth: buy and then use the product ----> experience and then engage with the product
3rd Moment of Truth:  customer Feedback, relationship maintenance, customer service engagement

First moment of truth: When a customer is confronted with the product in-store or in real life.
Second moment of truth: When a customer purchases a product and experiences it.
Third moment of truth: Consumers feedback or reaction towards a brand, product or service.

The world we live in is constantly changing and that speed is due to globalization which helped create innovation in many fields. Now a large impact we can see today is the innovation and advancement of technology which has created instant communication around the globe. From a marketing aspect this has created a ripple effect, technological advancement has been dropped into the world of marketing forever changing the old ways of doing things. Now what is one form of this ripple effect? That would be the fact we found a new Moment of Truth;

  • Zero Moment of truth (ZMOT) is a term coined by Google in 2011, actually refers to the research which is conducted by a user online about a product or service before taking any action. A simple example of that would be: searching the web on your mobile device to find reviews before making a purchase. Now that is something almost anyone can relate to in 2017. We are able to do this because of the advancement in technology and marketers have realized this so they have begun targeting it. The world wide web has changed the game once again but now it has a giant presence. According to research conducted by Google, 88% of US customers are researching online before actually buying the product.

Say you want to pick a restaurant to bring someone too, what do you do? look it up online. Say you want to go to a big concert coming up, what do you do? Compare prices online. Say you are planning your honeymoon, what do you do? Look up information online. This empowers the consumer and puts the ball into their court. I believe this is the future and we are experiencing the future as we speak, instantaneous comparisons, price matching, review ratings. We are able to watch marketing grow and we are able to see it form. This Zero Moment of Truth has created a paradox of choice…. but choice also happens:

  • Psychologist Barry Schwartz takes aim at a central tenet of western societies: freedom of choice. In Schwartz's estimation, choice has made us not freer but more paralyzed, not happier but more dissatisfied.(https://www.ted.com/talks/barry_schwartz_on_the_paradox_of_choice)

  • "Tipping Point" author Malcolm Gladwell gets inside the food industry's pursuit of the perfect spaghetti sauce — and makes a larger argument about the nature of choice and happiness.(https://www.ted.com/talks/malcolm_gladwell_on_spaghetti_sauce)

Now this is a great debate over the power of choice, ZMOT creates choice with the consumer. I believe choice is a great thing but some individuals believe there is too much choice. So above are two great Ted Talks that will argue both view points and I believe they both have strong points. So you as a consumer can decide what you feel.

"No matter how bad you want to fight change the world is always innovating and people adapt. We are living in the age of the future and our job as marketers is to adapt or vanish."

-Lukas Watson
